Rachel Townsend Cerny — About

A painter working in mixed media and collage from the Dallas–Fort Worth area — trained in the fundamentals, and spending her career finding her way past them.

Rachel Townsend Cerny in her studio, seated in front of several large-scale mixed media paintings

Rachel Townsend Cerny (RTown) holds a BFA in Drawing & Painting from the University of North Texas (2018) and has been building a body of work ever since that moves on instinct rather than plan — mixed media and collage that layer paint, mark-making, and found texture into something that reads as lived-in rather than composed.

Her practice has evolved from early, textured explorations of leisure and identity toward the large-scale paintings that anchor her current work, and is now moving toward something more luminous — delicate, light-filled, and quietly electric. Across all of it runs the same instinct: contradiction as a working method. The domestic and the wild. Grunge and beauty. The raw and the refined. She works from feeling, not formula, and lets each piece find its own shape before she decides what it means.
